The American Football lore runs deep. For proof, I would recommend that you all go out and read the recent GQ profile of the legendary Midwest emo band, who have broken up and reformed not once but twice. Their newest single, “Bad Moons,” taken from their forthcoming fourth LP, expands the parameters of what the band is capable of, both musically and lyrically. If a sort of youthful anxiety coated Mike Kinsella’s early lyrics, “Bad Moons” might be its middle-aged cousin, and it comes with the musical sweep to match those rings around the trunk. The track starts jazzy and personal before slowly building to a crushing post-rock crescendo. I listened after reading that article, and it was a somewhat intense experience … like most good rock and roll.
