Today I’m going to agree with the press release. The blast connected to High Cube, a new record that sees Brian Foote and Paul Dickow working collaboratively, calls the artists “two low-key legends of the American experimental underground.” No cap detected there, my friend! Both artists have decades-long histories in ambient and techno universes; both artists know how to ride the line between atmosphere and rhythm, and that is what they do here, on this playful set of dubby, improvised tunes. For the release, Foote and Dickow limited both gear selection and improv time. The overall effect is casual but focused, the kind of easygoing jamming that can only emerge after a lifetime of improvising and listening. There is a shared language between each performer that allows the music to mutate on its own terms. These sonic codes are practically built into their DNA.
