Are there cowboys in England? I did less than a minute of research on this topic and found that the answer to that question is a resounding It’s sort of complicated. But, listen, people: We aren’t here to talk about cowboys today; we are here to talk about 5 ST★R COWBOY, a mixtape recently released by the British buckaroo Elijah Right?—the question mark is intentional. The record is a joyride through hypercolor electronica styles, a beat tape that rarely taps the brakes. Footwork-inspired drum patterns collide with sugar-blasted synth twinkles; maximal sonics reminiscent of everything from golden age Atlanta trap to video game music are deployed with a nimble touch. At ten tracks, it runs smooth and never overstays its welcome. It’s music made for riding out to the old sundown.
