Though “5words,” the new single from the young London band RIP Magic, is over five minutes long, it earns its runtime. Starting with a swarming synth that cuts dramatically in and out of the mix, the track has a moody, lad-ish street style to it, careening with the forward momentum of a dealer making their runs. And here’s where I mention that this song is the first James Murphy production for a non-LCD Soundsystem band in over a decade. At around the three-minute mark, that fact becomes more apparent; the track almost starts to remix itself, like a mini-DFA version within an original, a payoff that sounds like a smooth comedown and some money in your pocket.
The single also includes a remix from Maurice Fulton, whose discography is too vast to nutshell here but whose project MU made some of the most imaginative dance punk of the 2000s. His remix steps on the gas, big time, and should remind us all that when executed at the highest level, this specific bag of jacking disco ball tricks can still provide big fun for all dancers involved. Are those piano runs riffing on “Get Innocuous,” or is that just my imagination?
