In 2026, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) celebrates its 30-year anniversary. Every October, ADE takes over the Dutch capital of Amsterdam for a week-long, multi-venue presentation of electronic music and culture. Its programming slate includes everything from stadium performances and intimate clubnights to industry talks, DJ and production workshops, brand activations and more. Over the decades, ADE has evolved from a small DIY gathering to the most prestigious event in the European dance music calendar, functioning as an ecosystem to grow the careers of myriad artists, particularly from the Dutch scene.
When ADE launched in 1996, it did so at a fascinating crossroads. While the founders of ADE were convinced of the event’s timely necessity — as the superclub era of DJing was in full force, and the Dutch scene was being soundtracked by a mix of trance, house, acid and techno — dance music was only just being considered a broader pop culture movement. Raves were packed with dancers as DJs and producers were developing new genres, and underground distribution networks kept the vinyl record business moving, but dance music was lacking a major infrastructure to keep powering it forward in Europe.
Into this space stepped ADE: to function as an incubator for new talent, where artists and industry players could network, share music, collaborate and more. That ethos has borne out over the decades — and the format of the now five-day event reflects that mission statement. There’s the festival, hosted in clubs, arenas and pop-up events throughout Amsterdam, where artists DJ and perform live.
There’s ADE Pro Conference, where key players across the dance music industry network and host panels, with keynote speeches by major artists and behind the scene figures. There’s ADE Lab, which focuses on DJing, production and career-boosting workshops and masterclasses, as well as a multimedia arts and culture program, which hosts live and interactive events across Amsterdam, with film screenings and exhibitions.
This entire ecosystem has its most profound impact on the career trajectories of the artists that play at the festival, and move through the various other wings of ADE as their careers progress. Throughout the event’s history, this has helped power various eras of genre development. In the 1990s, ADE was soundtracked by Dutch trance, British progressive house and American techno, with acts like Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and Paul van Dyk among some of ADE’s earliest championed names. Throughout this time, ADE also focused its attention on homegrown talent — and when the millennium hit, these Dutch acts were elevated to major slots, spreading the trance and techno gospel. Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten and Joris Voorn all established themselves in this period, particularly through ADE’s growing network of festivals like Awakenings.
When EDM infiltrated American popular culture, ADE adapted to its ripple effects in Europe, platforming Dutch and international acts. This included David Guetta, Hardwell, Afrojack, Nicky Romero and Don Diablo, who rose through the ranks during this era. Twenty years after the launch of ADE, dance music culture was truly at the top of the charts and embedded within the pop culture consciousness.
Today, ADE continues to elevate young, up-and-coming artists, both local and international, who are reshaping dance music in their own image. With the rise of fast techno, tech house and hard dance, and the massive resurgence of trance, the next wave of acts at ADE are carrying on the legacy. German trance DJ/producer Paul Van Dyk has performed at ADE for decades. In recent years, his VENTURE X concept show has recontextualised his trance classics to new audiences. His 2026 ADE show marks his fifth consecutive showcase at Amsterdam club Melkweg.
