Alternative Sweden

For decades, Sweden has been known as the Nordic home of culture-shifting, chart-topping music. From ABBA’s heartfelt disco ballads in the 1970s and producer Max Martin’s pop dominance in the late ‘90s-early ‘00s to maximalist dance artists like Swedish House Mafia and the late Avicii, and experimental acts like The Knife and vocalists Robyn, pop has pulsed through Swedish culture. In the underground, Sweden has also produced many boundary-pushing artists and scenes, from extreme heavy metal to experimental electronics, blending elements of rap, emo and more. Today, the Swedish alternative music scene is packed with a plethora of interesting acts across the genre spectrum, drawing from greater diversity, internet culture and global collaborations.

A key moment in the contemporary Swedish alternative music scene was the coming together of Drain Gang. A collective of producers, vocalists and songwriters that includes Yung Lean, arguably the crew’s biggest breakthrough star, and acts like Bladee, Ecco2K, Thaiboy Digital and Whitearmor, Drain Gang effectively created an underground ecosystem for new, internet-inspired music, which flourished on SoundCloud throughout the 2010s. Bridging auto-tuned rap, emo, trance, ambient and more, Drain Gang’s sound and collaborations brought global attention to the Swedish scene; the record label YEAR0001 pushed the sound, and the collective toured the US in 2022 to much acclaim among their growing Gen Z and Gen A audiences.

This underground scene, though experimental in nature, has stylistic connections to the Swedish mainstream: nailing a balancing act of hope and melancholy, in vocal tones, lyrics and melodic composition, that tugs at the heartstrings of listeners. And it’s not a balancing act confined to Drain Gang, either. As the underground continues to grow and breakthrough, Grammy-nominated young acts like Zara Larsson are bringing more attention to Swedish music, while artists from other genres have found themselves with a greater international spotlight on their work. In 2026, Swedish alternative music covers rap, R&B, indie pop, alternative rock, hardcore, bedroom pop, techno and more. Dive into this collection of fresh tracks — featuring artists such as MOLØ, Varg2™, Viagra Boys, Oli XL, Becky and the Birds, Nektar, Cherrie and more — and discover the sound of the new, alternative Sweden.
