Festival Radar: Desert Rave Trip

Since 1999, music fans have been gathering in the Coachella Valley desert of Indio, California, for an annual celebration of the arts to rival that of any metropolis. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been a mainstream platform for alternative icons, from Rage Against the Machine and Björk to Tool and Arcade Fire. Over the last 25 years, the festival has hosted an increasingly diverse range of artists, many of whom have had career-defining performances in the Valley: from Beyoncé and Bad Bunny to Rosalía and BLACKPINK. These superstar headliners play alongside edgier, underground acts, showcasing sounds across genres like punk, jazz, experimental electronic and myriad others.

Dance music has always been an integral part of Coachella. In its inaugural year, The Chemical Brothers, Moby and Underworld were booked as main acts, with support from drum ‘n bass originator Roni Size and techno luminaries like Richie Hawtin and Kevin Saunderson. Acts such as DJ Shadow and Paul Oakenfold also whipped up the desert into a frenzied dance storm.

In 2006, Daft Punk’s legendary Pyramid show made its global debut — and with social media and YouTube in its infancy, the French duo’s thumping filter house grooves traveled out of the Valley and around the world, signalling a new chapter for the American appetite for maximalist dance music. In the years that followed, deadmau5, Tiësto and Kaskade would all get top billing at the famed Sahara Tent.

Over the course of two consecutive action-packed weekends, the 2025 edition of Coachella boasts a massive lineup, from Travis Scott and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, to Missy Elliott and Post Malone, to name a few. In celebration of the desert’s enduring pull for dance music devotees, we’ve honed in on beats that are set to pulse throughout the Valley this spring.

Contemporary artists include A.G. Cook, VTSS and Amelie Lens, and seasoned acts Kraftwerk, Basement Jaxx and The Prodigy will perform, too. Whether you’re heading to the desert or just dreaming of it, this collection of rave-ready tracks belongs on your radar.
