Welcome to Sound Advice, the series spotlighting artists’ creative process and their SoundCloud journey. We’ll get the inside knowledge straight from the source on how musicians, producers and creatives are leaning into everything SoundCloud offers to elevate their sound, get heard and catapult their careers. Sound Advice is now available in audio format on the SoundCloud Stories profile.

In this special episode of Sound Advice, recorded live at SoundCloud’s office in New York City, we sit down with Swedish producer Armand Jakobsson — better known as DJ Seinfeld — to talk about the making of his latest album, ‘If This Is It,’ out now on Ninja Tune. Honing on how the album came together, we learn more about his creative process, which involves serendipity, sampling and distracting himself on the internet. We talk about the themes of the new record and its reflective and lush sound, as well as dive into his collaborations with Confidence Man and SG Lewis.

Diving into the arc of his decade-long career so far, we look back at how he first broke through, going from uploading to SoundCloud after a breakup to becoming one of the scene’s most in-demand DJs and producers. DJ Seinfeld shares more about how he likes to use SoundCloud these days, his feelings about the lo-fi house scene, his inspirations, and covers some of his favorite production techniques. Later on in the conversation, we open up the floor to take select audience questions, with DJ Seinfeld sharing further insights on DJing, overcoming perfectionism and remaining authentic.

Things We Talked About In This Episode of Sound Advice

The Making of DJ Seinfeld’s Latest Album, June 2026’s ‘If This Is It’

  • We begin the conversation with a discussion of ‘If This Is It,’ DJ Seinfeld’s latest album, on Ninja Tune. As the DJ/producer shares, the album explores themes of homesickness and the anxious feeling that something is always missing from your life. The album, then, is a document of working through these feelings, with DJ Seinfeld focusing on deeper, emotional listening over dancefloor-ripe club tracks.
  • Here, DJ Seinfeld compares and contrasts the creative process of ‘If This Is It’ against his previous work — from his early 2016 uploads to his 2021 album, ‘Mirrors’ — and how early on, sharing his music on SoundCloud helped him process a breakup. “The only thing I really did at work was to check SoundCloud stats, reposts, comments,” he remembers. After being picked up on lo-fi house music channels online, “From nowhere, I was at my lowest point, and then, slowly but surely, I was like, ‘Okay, this is turning out to be something amazing,’” he says.
  • Across ‘If This Is It,’ DJ Seinfeld works with artists like SG Lewis, Confidence Man and Moyka, among others. Here, he discusses how he likes to collaborate with vocalists and producers, and the kind of direction he gives in order to fully realize his vision. He also breaks down how, rather than worrying about procrastination, he harnesses online distraction as an inspirational tool in the studio — and shares how this has led to serendipitous sampling choices on some of his most recognizable tracks.

DJ Seinfeld on Coming Up on SoundCloud, Lo-Fi House and His Production Evolution

  • Since making his debut 10 years ago, DJ Seinfeld has reflected on the lo-fi house scene and SoundCloud community around it, which gave him and his peers like Mall Grab, DJ Boring and Ross From Friends a wider platform. Here, he talks about the sound and moving on, while hinting at a partial return to that era.
  • These days, DJ Seinfeld shares how he uses SoundCloud primarily to share demos with other artists, as well as considers the platform as an essential way to maintain a large, private archive of his material. He also touches on using SoundCloud as a distribution tool for sharing unreleased material, and to repost music from up-and-coming producers with smaller followings. “It doesn't cost you anything to repost something,” he says. “When somebody bigger than myself started reposting my stuff, that was the biggest thing that could ever happen to me.”
  • As DJ Seinfeld has evolved as a producer over the last decade, he’s moved away from his original lo-fi house sounds, with cassette-tape aesthetics, into bigger, lush styles of dance music that translate more powerfully on club soundsystems and festival stages. As part of that evolution, he’s expanded his production tools. Here, he also talks about his favorite plugins and tools, like Serum, Omnisphere and a chord generator called Chord G.
  • As DJ Seinfeld shares, one of his signature production techniques involves ripping YouTube interviews or videos into Ableton, and using the Convert-to-MIDI/Harmony function to generate unexpected melodic material. Here, he goes into more detail about the process.

DJ Seinfeld on Navigating the DJ Touring Life and Channeling Emotions into His Work

  • As a touring DJ, one of the most inspiring places that he’s ever performed is Bassiani, the iconic techno club in Tbilisi, Georgia. Nestled below Tbilisi’s national football stadium, Bassiani is a special venue to DJ Seinfeld — a space where people came purely to dance, with no phones and no judgement. As he reflects, these clubs are important to him because, as a naturally anxious person who tours a lot but misses home, he likes to find ways to embrace the solitude of life on the road.
  • Today, he says, he’s reached a place of comfort with it all — and channeled those feelings into ‘If This Is It.’ In terms of advice for fellow artists who may be experiencing the same emotions, DJ Seinfeld says that nerves are, in fact, a sign of caring, and the right response is to take risks and learn from mistakes rather than play it safe. “If you care, you get nervous, and that’s just the way it should be,” he says. “Take some risks — it might not work out, but at least you did your own thing.”

Our Live Audience Asked DJ Seinfeld Some Great Questions, Too

  • After DJ Seinfeld wrapped up his time on Sound Advice with Vivian Host, he took questions from the live audience, in SoundCloud’s New York City office. Having absorbed the conversation, fans shared their thoughts on the new album and asked thoughtful questions about his DJing, production tips and reflections on how to authentically navigate today’s music industry. Be sure to listen to the questions and DJ Seinfeld’s answers: he goes deep into personal and professional advice, and graciously opens up to the fans that were in the building for this special event.
  • The live Q&A is one of many elements of artist-to-fan interactions that are growing on SoundCloud, and deepening how music fans can directly engage with their favorite artists on the platform. In 2025, SoundCloud has expanded its arsenal of features to improve the artist-to-fan experience — from fan-powered royalties and the fan support button, to the Artist All-In-One subscription and more — to bring creators and listeners closer together.
