Sound Advice is now available in audio format on the SoundCloud Stories profile.

On this episode of Sound Advice, we catch up with UK-based singer, songwriter and producer, Erin LeCount, whose rise we celebrated as part of SoundCloud’s 2025 Ascending artist program. Erin talks to us about crafting her uniquely other-worldly and deeply personal alternative pop songs. We find out more about the themes of her latest EP, ‘PAREIDOLIA,’ her world-building approach to production and breaking out of the pop princess mold.

Erin also talks about how visual cues inform her work, channeling artists like Kate Bush and Björk, and how a surprise SoundCloud breakthrough for her 2025 debut single, “Silver Spoon,” transformed her artist journey. We discuss how sharing demos and remix stems fosters a deeper bond with fans, as well as the importance of embracing imperfection as part of the creative process. Erin also shares advice on using limited resources creatively, performing live and the importance of trusting intuition over following industry formulas.

Things We Talked About In This Episode of Sound Advice

Erin LeCount on Building Her One‑Woman Live Show to Create Movement and Magic Onstage

  • We begin the conversation with Erin LeCount with a reflection on her biggest show to date: her recent performance at London’s iconic Roundhouse. Erin reflects on how she invests a great deal of effort and creativity into her live show, from researching movement techniques and being inspired by ballet dancers and experimental cinema to evolving her set-up. Erin writes and performs all of her music, and acts as a “one woman band” on-stage, sharing, “There’s a freedom to it that I really really love.”
  • Here, she discusses her preparation routine, how she’s used digital and analog technologies — “lean on the resources you’ve got and you can make miracles” — and her journey through live performance, and gives advice to fellow artists who are on a similar path. “A good performer is a good performer, whether they’re in a bar with five people or a room with one thousand people,” she says.

Erin LeCount on Building Her Signature Pop Sound on ‘PAREDOLIA’

  • All of this world-building has given Erin a renewed creative confidence that comes through on her latest EP, ‘PAREIDOLIA.’ She explains how she wanted to make it a “loosely conceptual” EP that explored the seductive urge toward self‑destruction amid sudden career momentum. Journaling turned into diaristic songs that let her “press the button” in the music rather than in real life — a safe way to metabolize change and fear.
  • As Erin reflects, “MACHINE GHOST” is a centerpiece track that’s “beautiful to perform at shows,” sharing how the song came to her in a moment of exhaustion. Too tired to work out chords, she sang straight into a vocoder and built the track from her vocals and laptop: “It sounded exactly like my body felt,” she says. The blunt lyrical refrain — “it hurts to stand” — has become a textural and emotional signature for ‘PAREIDOLIA.’

Erin LeCount’s Musical Inspirations and Learning from Experimental Pop Music

  • Erin’s production “North star” is Kate Bush, whose innovative use of atmospheric sound, fantastical and personal lyrics and voice-as-instrument sonics has been a massive influence on her. Here, Erin traces that lineage through Imogen Heap and Björk; artists who treat production holistically, “like working with materials or fabrics or textures,” she says. Their physical view of music-making very much speaks to Erin.
  • Erin is also a “big believer” in autonomy. “I got into production because I felt so out of control going into [recording and writing] rooms” that she didn’t know how to navigate on a technical level. “I wanted to understand this thing I was holding,” she continues, touching on getting to grips with musical equipment and recording techniques.
  • Here, Erin goes into more detail about how learning to produce gave her the tools to “catch” ideas the moment they fall. “Sometimes we’re just channels” for music, she says, sharing how having hands on the synths and plugins means nothing gets lost in translation.
  • Erin also gets deeper into her technical set up, discussing how she’s gone from using early versions of Logic to incorporating synthesizers, keyboards and other digital and analog gear — including a Grandmother Moog. Lately, she’s leaning into “crunchy drum machines” that give her alternative pop sound a noisier edge.
  • While she considers herself a lover and student of “the science of pop music,” Erin is enjoying this next phase in her artistry. Here, she talks about her hybrid style of pop music through experimental electronic palettes, rethinking “psychologically addictive” melodies and how to bend the “rules” of pop to craft the most interesting tracks she can. Here, she references acts like “underrated master” Carly Rae Jepsen, Girls Aloud and Ariana Grande’s for their innovation.

How Erin LeCount Used SoundCloud to Break Through With Her Debut Track, “Silver Spoon”

  • Erin has been using SoundCloud since the very beginning to catalog her music and share demos with fans — but when she uploaded the chorus to her debut track “Silver Spoon,” everything changed.
  • Overnight, she saw the demand for her unfinished track, and there was a sense of “divine timing” for her. As she reflects, around Christmas 2024, the song’s theme of strained family dynamics spoke to the listener. She let the early demo version, with all its “initial feeling,” live on SoundCloud — and grow and grow. As she puts it, “SoundCloud felt like a democracy,” sharing her raw takes and evolutions with fans along the way.
  • Today, SoundCloud is her process hub and a core place — alongside her own discussion forum — for her to engage with her fans. Here, Erin talks about how she posts private and unlisted links, shares alternate cuts and stems to her tracks, and pays attention to timestamped comments to understand where listeners really lean in. The platform also hosts the “raw or alternate” demos that her fans value — acting as a living archive beyond the final, mastered versions.
  • Fan feedback can reshape the live show, too. She goes into more detail about the life of her track “Godspeed,” from her 2025 EP ‘I Am Digital, I Am Divine,’ and how it went from a demo snippet on SoundCloud to becoming “one of the loudest moments” in her live show.

Tapping Into Remix Culture and Cross-Genre Collaboration in 2026

  • Another way that Erin kept “Godspeed” in front of her fans was to share the track stems for remixing. Erin appreciates the power of a great remix — having grown up listening to  remix albums and acts like Daft Punk — so she’s tapping into that energy and culture in her work today. “MACHINE GHOST” was recently remixed by Nashville-raised producer Cosette, who draws from PC music-style modern pop and opened for Erin on her recent North American tour.
  • Beyond the live touring and cycle for ‘PAREIDOLIA,’ Erin has been busy creating multidisciplinary work. Recently, she scored a theatrical performance at the UK’s National Theatre, which allowed her to experiment further and build artistic confidence. Looking further into 2026, Erin is headed “back to basics”: with piano and singing lessons, and a deeper dive into modular synthesis.
  • In her personal listening, she’s “more ready to collaborate” and especially loves British musicians like indie artist Sade Olutola, rapper-producer Jim Legxacy and Natanya, fueling a season of cross‑pollination in the UK’s alternative music scenes. While we wait to hear what the future will hold for Erin, you can find out more about Erin’s upcoming tour dates here.
