Ascending Artist: Producer and DJ Sam Girling

Producer and DJ Sam Girling is taking major steps to assert himself as a force in electronic dance music this year. The Bedford, England, native recently released his debut EP, Attacca, which is an extension of his record label and now dance party of the same name. Girling is also the latest featured artist in SoundCloud’s Ascending program, which shines the spotlight on rising artists around the world each month. By supporting participating artists through billboards, social media content, and playlists, UK Ascending gives artists like Girling the necessary resources to advance their careers. It’s already done wonders for Girling, who’s made an impact on the platform in recent years.

Releases such as “Empty Flat in Berlin,” “Go,” and “Can’t Help U” showcase the edge in Girling’s adrenaline-soaked style—which has helped set him apart in the EDM space. Meanwhile, “I’ll Never Let You Go” and the feverishly-paced “Ankerklause (Is The Feeling Only Strong)” exhibit Girling’s adventurous approach to production and willingness to incorporate the most spaced-out sounds into his music. The latter has over 300,000 plays on SoundCloud and attitude Girling brings to the track is the pulse of Attacca, which he adapted into a party in his hometown this year. Well-aware of the gaping hole in Bedford’s nightlife scene, Girling aimed to create the type of atmosphere he felt was missing.

Although much of Girling’s inspiration can be traced back to what was absent from Bedford, his SoundCloud holds a singular place in his genesis as an artist. It eliminated a massive barrier for Girling, giving him the opportunity to find himself as an artist while simultaneously growing his audience. By the time he found his groove, he’d already developed a following. Figuring it out on the fly has helped shape the unrestrained approach Girling brings to every aspect of his music.

“SoundCloud has been my blank canvas to experiment with… once a track is out there, there are no rules or limitations as to where that may lead you.”
