Over the last few years, a new style of indie rock music has been growing on SoundCloud. This August, our Ascending spotlight is highlighting the fast-growing scene and some of its key artists.
SoundCloud’s Ascending is a monthly series that celebrates rising artists from around the globe who are breaking through. Previous Ascending artists include DIY alternative rock artist crayon, rapper and producer slayr, vocalist and producer twentythree and electronic artist DJ_Dave, to name a few.
This month, the spotlight is shining on SoundCloud Indie: a burgeoning scene of vocalists, musicians, songwriters and producers.
Their tracks may be guitar-led, but it’s all about a fresh take on indie rock. The scene is led by a new generation of young artists — including kid moon, ankle, yuri and beige — who all got their start through URL and IRL music communities, like Campfire Stories, where artists share work with fans and collaborate online, and more broadly on SoundCloud. “Though most people don’t realize it, we’ve practically grown up together,” says yiru, one of the artists in focus.
It’s all brought together with heartfelt lyrics, lo-fi sonics and homegrown creativity. It’s “very DIY,” says kid moon, another artist in this month’s Ascending roster. “Everyone’s doing it themselves — making the instrumentals, recording, writing.” More bedroom producers than basement players, these acts blend influences such as internet-centric rap, pop, R&B, emo and electronic music into their style of alternative rock.
