She saw in the ancient lines
inscribed on the inner walls of the temple
a sequence of irregular green-grey mounds.
This new code had seven letters.

She determined they were densely compounded
but highly precise maps
of the holy ones.
She studied the holy ones to determine
a significant distinction between life and non-life
an elaborate, coherent, meaningful design
an organic fractal interconnection.

She believed these maps
held the promise of eternal life,
an indefinite retention
of that agency of unity
which she called the vessel.

She structured the conditions of her work
around this single purpose:
the vessel rising up into the fire
beneath the holy ones
surrounded by them
some in clusters, some alone.

“The map opens the doors
to remotely operated vessels,
vessels equipped with high-resolution cameras.
Before the doors close again,
the gates to the path,
I shall cross over the fire,
through the holy ones
as they grow dark,
a gradual unfolding
which I will experience
as a sevenfold development
of energy unbound.
As a falcon flies,
so may I rise into the fire.”
