Rising debt is forcing a fire sale of public property by councils by Proletarian Radio

The government is using special measures to push local authorities into selling off countless public buildings and other assets.

There was outrage in Croydon when the sell-off of Broad Green library led to its books being dumped on the ground outside by contractors sent to ‘clean up’ the property for its new owners. The huge and systematic transfer of historic and community assets into private hands is permanently depriving workers of a wide range of amenities while providing only short-lived funding for the councils concerned. How will they plug deliberately-engineered budget shortfalls when the crown jewels have all been sold? And who will be answerable to the public whose assets have been flogged off in this national fire sale?
