I’m a first generation Iranian American, born by the Caspian Sea in Gilan, where we speak Gilaki a sweet, soulful dialect that holds a deep place in my heart.
After 43 years, I returned to my birth town and was heartbroken to see that many in the new generation no longer speak Gilaki. It’s fading.
So I decided to do something about it. I’m creating an album called
HOME + LAND
America, my home.
Gilan, my land.
Seven songs all in Gilaki.
Song 2: Eshaleh
Music and performance: Jayce
Produced by: Patrick Aguirre
My hope is that, if young generation see us singing and dancing, they’ll feel the beauty of Gilaki dialect, and speak it with pride.
Eshaleh!!! is an energetic Gilaki dance song, journey to the old Gilan,
Erooz boshom Konosskaleh
I went to the konoss (pair) farm,
Where boys and girls meet on picking days.
Konoss becham eprah prah
I picked a lot of Konoss,
Filling my hands with its sweet fruit.
Edaneh me dahan dakateh
One fell into my mouth,
Its taste melting on my tongue.
Me dahaneh ab dakateh
My mouth watered instantly,
Longing for more of its sweetness.
Elahee tea mareh bemerah
Oh, may fate take me away,
If I can’t have what my heart desires.
Me deleh garareh be geerah
My heart aches for peace,
But restlessness lingers inside.
Amoot daram boranah
I have an uncle who calls for me,
Telling me stories of old.
Chmpsh daram sorana
And an aunt who sings me lullabies,
Her voice soothing like a gentle breeze.
Barareh khob darameh
I have a kind-hearted brother,
Always watching over me.
Hatchin beroon narameh
I won’t step outside,
Not unless I have to.
Ageh beroon baramah
If I do step out,
Dahta aross geramah
I might just find myself a bride.
Handanamh handanam
I smile, I laugh,
Hiding the excitement in my heart.
Very beshim Konosskaleh
Let’s go again to Konosskaleh,
Where joy and love bloom.
Beyah besheem Konosskaleh
Come, let’s go together,
Back to the farm of sweet memories.
Eshaleh eshaleh khosha
May happiness be ours tonight,
Under the golden moonlight.
Namzad bazy amshab
Tonight, we play the lovers’ game,
Whispering sweet words in the dark.
Erooz boshom Konosskaleh
I went to the Konoss farm,
Where love and laughter fill the air.
Konoss becham E-pareh pareh
I picked Konoss, so many, so full,
Yet my heart remains hungry for more.
