GOURANGA MIXTAPE: Luke Solomon's 'Diamonds & Pearls' Prince Tribute by Gouranga published on 2017-05-24T10:57:36Z DOWNLOAD: http://hypeddit.com/track/sc/a4l5hc Classic Record Company boss, Freaks member and Defected A&R @lukesolomon gives an exclusive Prince tribute for our latest mixtape. We'll let him tell you about it in his own words: "The day Prince died was the strangest thing. David Bowie dying hit me in an unusual way. I had always looked up to him as a chameleon artist. Someone who’s approach to music, I found fascinating. Mutating through generous and re-invention. I felt incredibly grief stricken, which didn’t sit well with me. Especially having been accustomed to personal grief from a very early age. Why was I so sad about someone dying that I didn’t really know, that was odd. What I soon realised was that this was more about my fear of getting old and facing that reality. My kids were confused and asked my questions, “Dad, why are you so sad about Bowie.” I couldn’t really give them an honest answer but it lead to a greater question from them. Which artists death would upset you more? Kids, straight to the point. We all said Prince at the same time and laughed.Like that was going to happen. The day Prince died and went in to my studio and started to pull out everything I owned. From the age of 13 I was a convert. Beyond fanatical. Collected, bought, watched. I was a fully fledged member of the NPG website even. It felt different. I refused to believe he was dead and it helped my deal with it. I still do. I started to digitise my entire collection. I wanted to put everything in one place and share it with my friends. It felt cathartic. I had texts from friends who knew what an impact he has had on my life, and for a few days I felt like some kind of gate keeper, as I am sure many other fans did. Being a Prince fan always felt like you were in some kind of Purple gang. The same week a friend asked me to play a tribute party at Dalston Superstore and I naturally agreed. I played and recorded the night. I’m pretty sure most people were there to hear Purple Rain - but to me, there was always another side. The result was a collection of my personal favourites, overdubbed with loops from different singles , edits that I have done over the years, and interviews I collected."
