Gothen Evan Blades Jolley SLC Gothen is the music project of Evan Blades Jolley, currently based in Salt Lake City. However, Gothen was initially conceived in 2009 while Jolley was living abroad in Norway, spending his time sheep farming and writing songs with a broken guitar and tape recorder. Since returning home and dedicating himself to songwriting, the shape of his originally intimate music became expanded and fully realized. Creating well-crafted, thematically orchestral, dark, folk and even jazz driven songs and all led by his angelic voice that’s as delicate as it is powerful, resulting in his eponymous debut album Gothen. Like stepping into an ancient tapestry, Gothen provides a sprawling of texture, character, and color, drawing inspiration from 19th century philosophies and historic imagery, all confronting a “spiritual dilemma”. Jolley approaches modern sounds while avoiding the gimmicks of trends, making his music topical and timeless. From the fast paced slyness of “Overman” teeming with living noise, to the sparse and vocally powerful “AM”, Jolley’s hard work and attention to detail, pay off in the end, making his music an attractive and classic piece of 21st century music from a young, innovative songwriter.
