Yudhishtira's Dice by Gord Sellar

An undergrad composition from my third year of music studies, with a title inspired by the film version of Peter Brook's production of <i>The Mahabharata</i>. (It was originally titled "Arjuna's Dice" as I misremembered the story of the game of dice from that narrative.) The vocal writing mixes elements from Tuvan throat singing (or attempts at the same) and Balinese kecak.

It was my biggest composition to date at the time, with a wind quartet, percussion trio (one of whom plays water glasses), and six voices. Not the biggest musical success ever, but interesting at points.

This was recorded at the Convocation Hall at my third year composition recital in 1996. I don't have the recital form but a partial list of personnel includes:

Bass Clarinet/Clarinet: Lana Fribance (I think)
