Freedom is something that resonates in many ways, mainly shaped by the spaces it might occupy. Individually, it is quite personal in the way it can be felt, coming into being as a sensation; collectively, it can reach wider worlds of shared meaning, becoming tangible as a situation. But, whichever the scope of its manifestation, it remains deeply attached to one fundamentally human act: expression, which is exactly why it is so essential to artistic creation. Artists must be free so they can present us with new perspectives of our reality or even offer new ones. Tasks that Suelen Mesmo embraces as missions, deeply and wholly, by taking the concept to its utmost consequences in order to make us not just feel it but also live it on the dancefloor, where after all they all reach their truest sense. Everything she does musically is drenched in a notion of liberation through motion and emotion, the same that reigns supreme on a dancefloor and that she managed to condense in this powerful mix. A celebration of that principle through music and for music: free to be, free to play, free to love, free to live. Things that sometimes can be challenging to enjoy as a young black woman even today, but that’s exactly why she does it as if her very existence depends on it.
