FASANO: AN INTRODUCTION

FASANO is Matthew Fasano. He sang with a bunch of us in the men's chorus for those final LCD Soundsystem shows last year.

This project is Matthew's first solo outing, and "Muzzle You" is his second single on GODMODE. I admit Fasano's ultra-minimal pop approach doesn't seem to scan with the hurly-burly shithead vibe we've got going here. Instead it's a guy singing--quite beautifully--and playing chords on a reasonably in-tune piano. Save the occasional hand clap, the songs aren't much more than that. They're portable, re-performable. Songs you could--technically--buy sheet music for and play them at family parties. There's a humility to their composition, presentation, and performance. On a physical level I just like listening to them. They're almost relaxing.

I say "almost" because--that's when the lyrics hit you. Couched in these simple, hummable melodies are some really emotionally screwy thoughts. The kind of subconscious nasty-little-voice stuff that, when you least expect it, swims to the front of your head and frightens you with its intensity: hatred, jealousy, lust, loneliness, self-destruction. Feelings you're embarrassed to have, let alone admit to having, but there they are. In that regard he out-hurlyburlies the rest of his GODMODE labelmates. Big time.

At any rate. I like how Matty creates a humble instrumental context for these kinds of thoughts to exist, then fills your head with his own. Except when he says them, it's in that reedy voice of his--maybe the easiest thing I've ever recorded. Case in point, "Muzzle You". Far from frightened, I'm just relieved that someone else has felt that way too.
