O'Brien was an all-Ireland football champion for the Louth team. He went on to from St. Malachy's Ceili Band before branching out into the showband scene with Dermot O'Brien and The Clubmen. His best know hit was the Merry Ploughboy, and appeared on an American St. Patrick's Day television special alongside Bing Crosby. Recorded in 1954 and released on the HMV label (IP898).
