The album “In a Nick of Time” by Lydia Kavina and Roman Yusipey presents a program containing the XX-XXI century compositions, performed on Theremin and Accordion. It includes arranged works by O.Messiaen, S.Prokofiev, J.Cage and S.Gubaidulina, as well as original compositions for this duet, written by L. Kavina and V. Poleva.

Russian-born and based in the UK, Lydia Kavina is currently one of the leading theremin performer. She studied the theremin under the direction of the inventor Léon Theremin himself. Lydia also studied piano and hold a degree in music theory and composition from the Moscow Conservatory. Lydia’s theremin activity includes performances with chamber ensembles and orchestras, theatre plays, film soundtrack recordings and teaching. Between her performances: “Tim Burton and Danny Elfman’s show” with BBC Concert Orchestra and London Symphony at London Royal Albert Hall and in the UK tour, 4th Symphony by C.Ives, under Kent Nagano, (Hamburg and Zurich, 2018-2019), and ballet “The Little Mermaid” by Lera Auerbach and John Neumeier, in Copenhagen, Beijing and Hamburg Opera (2005-2013). Her video tutorials and online programs are widely used among beginning thereminists. She regularly teaches at Theremin Academy sessions in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Chile.
Accordion-player Roman Yusipey was born in Kherson, Ukraine. He’s graduated from National Music Academy of Ukraine, took a postgraduate course in University of Music and Drama in Hannover and in Folkwang Univerity in Essen. Participated in IX Premio di Montese International Competition in Italy (1st prize) and in the I Golden Accordion International Competition in New York (2nd place). Has toured in Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Japan, Kazakhstan and Malta. Has performed in the last seasons at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Jenaer Philharmonie, Radio Berlin-Brandenburg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, De Doelen Rotterdam, Mozarteum Salzburg, Salle Cortot Paris. Has been a visiting professor at the Kazakh Kurmangazy National Conservatory and a jury member at the International accordion competition in Lanciano, Italy. As a soloist has performed about hundred concerts with camber and symphony orchestras. Roman Yusipey collaborates vigorously with contemporary composers and has premiered numerous works for button accordion. He was the initiator of first Sofia Gubaidulina visit to Ukraine in 2012. Author of an audio anthology “Ukrainian music of the 21th century for button accordion”.
