Stuart Fenton (Stu) is a qualified clinical psychotherapist and counsellor with over 10 years’ experience working in the addiction treatment field. He is Head Counsellor at R12, a LGBTQ dedicated destination rehab facility, part of The Cabin Addiction Services Group located in Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. In this Gaydio interview, Stu explains that minority stress is any incident that a person experiences, in this case because of sexual identity or gender identity that is stressful and or traumatic. This can include prejudice, bullying, coming out fears, hate crimes, family rejection and social alienation which can then result in internalized homophobia, unbearable shame and/or low self-esteem.
