This seminar summarises different arguments for the listed status of the iconic 1960s residential estate in Poplar, East London, designed by Alison and Peter Smithson. The Changing Notion of Home through Robin Hood Gardens is the first session, chaired by Professor Adrian Forty (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL). Writer and editor of Robin Hood Gardens Re-Visions (2009), Alan Powers opened with a paper exploring conflicting causes and competing interested involved in determining the future of Robin Hood Gardens. Following this, Catherine Croft, Director of the Twentieth Century Society and editor of C20 Magazine, gave her perspective. Finally, architect Sarah Wigglesworth offered a pragmatic view of why we might wish to save Robin Hood Gardens that touches upon the importance of community life and potential for improved environmental sustainability through refurbishment.
