"In the last five years that I've had the opportunity of being on The Revival Tour, it's been nothing but an invigorating breath of fresh air amongst the sea of live music out there today,” explains Americana singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan about the musical and cultural collaborative phenomenon that he helped create. “The revolving showcase of real music by real people in a simple grassroots fashion seems it originated in the old days from families and communities sharing music together, this is the simple ethic in live music events that we aim to revive.” The UK and European edition this Fall kicks off with a multi-national collection of amazing storytellers in Ragan, American singer/songwriter Cory Branan (who played on this past Spring’s US edition), Western Australia’s Emily Barker, Canada’s Jay Malinowski from reggae band Bedouin Soundclash and Texan Rocky Votolato.
The Revival Tour begins its trek in Cardiff, Wales on 16 October and circling throughout Europe and returning to the UK in late November.
Loosely structured in the form of old-fashioned folk musician get-togethers, The Revival Tour is an ensemble collective in which the participating musicians collaborate and jam, frequently creating unique and inspired once-in-a-lifetime moments of brilliance – often multiple times in a single night. "I'm over the moon to be invited to perform as part of this tour,” says Emily Barker excitedly. “My friend and collaborator Frank Turner has done it three times now and cannot praise it enough. I really enjoy collaborating and performing with different songwriters and musicians so can't wait to meet Chuck, Jay, Rocky, Cory, Jon and Joe and begin playing!"
"The Revival Tour I was lucky enough to be a part of in the States was the best tour I've ever been on,” says Cory Branan, who shared the stage this past Spring with Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio, The Emergency Room), Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), and Nathaniel Rateliff. “I’m looking forward to working hard for the people’s over the pond!"
"I wasn't going to be doing any touring this year at all but when I got the call from Chuck I jumped at the chance,” explains Jay Malinowski about why he needed to do the tour. “I'm really proud to be a part of this. This will be the first time I will be playing new material from my new project Deadcoast, and I can't think of better people to be sharing the stage with than Chuck and his band."
Echoing Jay’s enthusiasm, Rocky Votolato shares, “I've wanted to jump on a leg of the Revival tour ever since Chuck started it in 2008, but our schedules just never quite lined up. I'm so excited to be a part of this European run and I'm really looking forward to collaborating with such a talented group of musicians every night. I've heard from many friends that have done the tour in the past what an amazing experience it is and that there's really nothing like it - I can't wait!”
The critically-hailed tour has hosted Avail’s Tim Barry, Lucero’s Ben Nichols, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon, Jenny Owen Youngs, Sparta’s Jim Ward, 7 Seconds’ Kevin Seconds, Audra Mae, The Loved Ones’ Dave Hause, and Frank Turner among many diverse and exciting cast of collaborators. Kerrang! gave the tour five K’s, saying, “Is this the best open mic night in the world? Yes, Yes it is!” while CLINK loudly proclaims, “It was magical, a night you would never ever forget and personally one of my favorite shows ever.”
Conceptualized in 2005 and coming to fruition in 2008 with the inaugural lineup of Ragan, Tim Barry (Avail), Ben Nichols (Lucero), and a cast of revolving guests including Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), the tour spanned 57 days playing a total of mind-numbing 52 shows, while the next year saw the tour stretch the width of the US. 2010 saw The Revival Tour across Australia with the likes of Frank Turner, Tim Barry, Ben Nichols, Ragan, Jen Buxton, Jamie Hay and Darren Gibson followed by a one-off performance in Las Vegas with a wide cast of artists from members of Flogging Molly including Nathan Maxwell and Matt Hensley, members of Lucero, Lagwagon and the Adolescents. In 2011, Revival crossed the Atlantic and darted across UK, Ireland, and Europe. Largely playing to sold-out in 1,500 to 2,500-capacity venues, 2012’s US tour hit over 33 major markets throughout the U.S. and Canada, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Nashville.
“For those who've yet to experience this type of gig or newcomers who've yet to travel on the tour, they'll find the tradition and bond between the crew, artists and patrons as well as the staff from each venue that hosts this event to be one of a kind each and every night,” Chuck adds, referring to the supportive and exciting camaraderie that permeates the environment. “I'm honored to be amongst a new cast of incredible songwriters to be challenged and inspired all over again!”
Thus begins a new chapter in The Revival Tour’s storied history.
