The Roots, Common, Mos Def w/ The Expressions - Do You Love Hurricane? (Steely Chan's Blender Mash) by Steely Chan published on 2011-10-05T19:58:37Z We’re winding down our Mos Def / Lee Fields tribute project with the final tracks of the mixtape. Today’s blend is the longest in the series and has quite the backgrounder. “Hurricane” was the title track to the 1999 film about the life of wrongly-imprisoned boxer, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. The song was a collaborative effort by the heavy hitters in the Okayplayer camp (Common, Mos Def, Dice Raw, Jazzyfatnastees, Flo Brown & The Roots) with each verse highlighting different moments in Carter’s life. Apparently, the lyrical structure was inspired by Bob Dylan’s classic 1975 protest song of the same name. We thought the vocals were a good match for Lee Fields’ ‘Do You Love Me’ and feel the somber mood of the finished mix really complements the lyrical content. A timeless tale for the ages....enjoy!
