Gaelic Word of the Week 35 – St Andrews Day – Latha Fèill Anndrais by ScotParl published on 2013-11-28T15:20:52Z Gaelic Word of the Week – St Andrews Day – Latha Fèill Anndrais This week sees the day of Scotland’s Patron Saint – Saint Andrew – Naomh Anndras. Saint Andrews Day, 30th November, is known as Latha Fèill Anndrais in Gaelic. The university town of St Andrews – situated in the Scottish Parliament’s North East Fife constituency – is named after the saint. It is said that St Rule brought the bones of the apostle to St Andrews to rest there. The Gaelic name for the town does not refer to St Andrew – Naomh Anndras – however. The Gaelic name is Cill Rìmhinn which was the basis of the town’s former English name of Kilrymont. There is an interesting connection between the Scottish Parliament – Pàrlamaid na h-Alba - and St Andrews University – Oilthigh Chill Rìmhinn – is the home of the Records of the Scottish Parliament to 1707 project which catalogues the proceedings of the pre-1707 Scottish Parliament – Pàrlamaid na h-Alba. To wish someone a happy St Andrews Day, you would say “Latha Fèill Anndrais Sona”. Genre gaidhlig
