There was a letter in the mailbox today
it came from far, far away
The words were lonely and sad to me
my Johnnie said pray that we may soon be free
the bullets are flying overhead the bombs dropping nearby
and I am so afraid for my own life as I watch my good friends die

Tell my wife I love her and I'll write her a letter today
Oh, and mom Please don't forget to pray

we're moving out today deeper behind enemy lines
I only hope this letter reaches home before time
I have this funny feeling that I can't seem to shake
the lonesome feeling that I won't see the daybreak

My name is Joe Mrs. Davis
I was Johnnies best friend
so I will finish this letter that your son Johnnie began

He loved both you and his wife
He talked about you everyday
He asked me to tell you he loved you both if he should go this way
He asked me to tell you not to grieve
if he should be chosen today
and he said and please mom don't forget to pray

P.S. he had dirt in his face Mrs. Davis
remember like he used to all the time
