There can be no study of the Unknown
which does not become a study of the M. body and the event.
For 8 of the 12 years he was under observation, M. was invisible.
From the outside, he was unresponsive, a vegetable.
He became the kind of man we do not want to be: an outcast, accursed, crucified.
We could thus observe the Unknown’s complete absence
even unto the death of the body.
But deep inside, M. was vaguely aware of everything.
"About two years into my death state, I began to wake up.”
The Unknown’s humanity manifested in the dehumanized M.
The Unknown was being born within the M. body.
M. soon realized his immobility.
“I was going to spend the rest of my life like that – totally alone.
I would never get out. "
He was completely with himself and completely with the Other.
The Unknown’s nature present in the contradiction of abandonment.
But certain thoughts emerged:
"The Unknown is not more glorious than I am in this self-surrender.
The Unknown is not more powerful than I am in this helplessness."
“At first you have no idea what it is,
but slowly it comes into focus until you can see it in crystal clarity.
All around me, inside of me, were things that didn't have names.
I observed the Unknown alive within me.
The process was slow and careful.
Give it a color and a smell at first.
Maybe a tone, a frequency perhaps
maybe even a vibration."
The Unknown event took place within the body of the frozen M.
This was his first semblance of control.
He called it the ‘Image of the Invisible Unknown.’
It gave him the sense of being able to climb out of the darkness.
"For me the meaning was clear:
This is the Unknown, and the Unknown is like this.
And from the Unknown I gain my strength."
The nucleus of everything that M. says about ‘the Unknown’
is to be found in this M. event.
The M. event within the body is the Unknown event.
“I would have conversations with myself and other people in my head.
In the name of the Unknown within me
I would command them to play! play! play! PLAY!"
The Unknown was now acting externally.
The M. body was rising.
The Unknown had come to life.
