Subtension - AK47 / Leaving / Offset by Renegade Hardware published on 2014-09-30T16:44:52Z Keeping true to the cause of breaking the most exciting new wave of producers, our latest recruit: Subtension debuts his first solo release! Delivering three diverse tracks reaching out far and wide into the drum and bass scene from his base in Slovakia. Opening number AK47 is like its namesake; weaponry of the highest quality and calibre. Constructed around rough as you like reese basslines that incorporate dancefloor destroying triplets along-side gruff, evil stabs and modulated madness. The tune smacks you in the face like the hammer of Thor. The tightly coiled, clipped drum beat demands respect with sucking and blowing industrial-esq sound effects - that gently waft in time with the track in the background - working perfectly in conjunction with the tune’s deep subs and classic jungle fills, that when combined, ramp up the levels of dread to claustrophobic levels. It’s a dark, rolling number that perfectly epitomises the beefed up, aggressive Hardware sound. Leaving is a more experimental track. Built around a tough half step drum beat and heady, sci-fi movie atmospherics and haunting string movements. The bassline rattles bleeps and warps like bending metal, syncopating with the high-pitched tortured synth stabs and the militant drum work to massively floor stomping effect. Finally, Offset starts off life in forward thinking ragga dancehall mode, with the genres classic 3-3-2 riddim joining up with techy synth work and Vangelis blade runner type pads and alien sound effects that rip and tear across the audio spectrum before the tune launches into an experimentally dark vocally expressive roller. Beefy but eccentric drum work cosy’s up to classic reese sounds, deep subs, techy percussive synth works that modulate from speaker to speaker in a deliriously insanity inducing way and strangely affecting vocals samples/effects and melodies that are clearly not of this planet.
