Legacy Overture (Grand Mesa Recording) by Randall Standridge published on 2019-05-21T21:26:36Z LEGACY OVERTURE (2019, Grade 3, Grand Mesa Music). I love the concert band overtures of the 1980s and 1990s. James Swearigen, Claude T Smith, and other all hold a very special place in my heart and, more importantly, in my ear. It occurred to me that I had never written a piece with the word "Overture" in the title, so...here you go! Legacy Overture is a total throwback to the older style of concert band overtures. The percussion have been scored using only "traditional" percussion instruments and the overall feel is that of the energetic, tonal sounds for young band at that time. The ABA form is given the traditional "Fast Melody in one meter, Slow melody in another meter" treatment. The work also serves as a tribute to Dr. John Wacker. His students commissioned the work in his memory with two requests: 1) It be achievable for small bands (which it is, check out the scoring) and 2) that is include an opportunity for his signature method of teaching 7/8 time by chanting "Ta-co, Ta-co, Ta-co Bell!" The result is before you! Thank you to Andre Wilkins and the rest of Dr. Wacker's students for trusting me with this project. I hope I have done his memory and this style of piece justice.
