It was 1965 and the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion bands were in full swing. I had been playing the trumpet throughout school, but suddenly the trumpet just wasn’t very cool. The guitar was in. So I bought a guitar, taught myself a few chords and started a band of sorts with a few friends. We all had acoustic guitars that we were learning to play, and we made them into “electric guitars” by literally taping the microphone from a small reel-to-reel tape recorder onto the guitar so it would be sort of amplified. We bought Beatles sheet music in order to learn the tunes. But we noticed that there was a line on the bottom of the sheet music written in bass cleff. None of us knew the bass cleff. But I knew the treble cleff from the trumpet while my buddies were clueless. So I volunteered to learn the bass cleff, and I became the bass player. My entire musical career evolved from that!” From that moment on Robert Miller became immersed in music and began the steps that would evolve into his current endeavor, Project Grand Slam.
