This Gay Week The Gay Hero Who Helped Stop 9/11

He helped take down a hijacked plane headed for the Capitol — then his own partner had to fight to be recognized at all.

Tomorrow marks 9/11, and one of the biggest heroes of that day was Mark Bingham — one of the four passengers on Flight 93 who fought back, forcing the plane down in a Pennsylvania field instead of Washington, D.C. Mark was gay, and in the aftermath, his surviving partner was initially denied benefits by the airline until public pressure shamed them into doing the right thing. Melissa Etheridge wrote a song about him. We're telling his story too — because a gay man broke every stereotype about who a hero is supposed to be, and it still isn't told enough.

Also this week: in the UK, service members discharged under the military's ban on LGBTQ personnel between 1960 and 2000 may now be entitled to £70,000 in compensation — but the application window closes in early December.
