Mike Shannon brings his notorious studio acumen to NYC’s Convent Records with a three-track EP of twisted, swirling, psychedelic, club-focused cuts.

A true stalwart of the scene, Mike Shannon is a name synonymous with class and sophistication in house music—yet not without a penchant for grit, punch, sultry seductiveness, and, especially, psychedelia. The timeless quality of his work can be partially understood when examining his decades-long career as an international DJ and influential producer across a uniquely broad spectrum of underground dance music.

Here, we see him joining forces with NYC minimal and dub label Convent, sister label to the now well-established Onysia Records, with a power-packed three-track affair: Devil’s Night EP.

The release kicks off with ‘Devil’s Night’, a laid-back roller of a track—the type of hypnotic minimalism that reverberates long after the party ends. The bass and modulating synth lines interplay over crunchy grooves, conveying a feeling reflected in the track’s provocative title.

Things get taken up a notch with ‘The Filth Element’, its burbling bass and nearly atonal synth experimentations adding a touch of aggression into the fold. Yet, there is still an amount of expertly infused restraint, alluding to the delicate balance that must be kept in serious minimal styles.

The EP concludes with the leftfield-veering ‘Bang Bang, Stick Em Up!’, a shuffling stomper infused with dissonant jazz chords, unpredictable changes, and fantastic groove through and through.
