Nick Hudson
Tbilisi
Nick Hudson is a composer, performer, activist, writer and visual artist based in UK and Tbilisi, Georgia.
Musically he has collaborated with Massive Attack's Shara Nelson, Current 93, members of Mr Bungle, The Mission, Secret Chiefs 3, Matthew Seligman (Bowie, Morrissey and Tori Amos), Kayo Dot, Asva.
His visual art has graced his and others' album covers and he has sold work in the UK and the US. His works often incorporate found materials and dwell somewhere between painting, assemblage and sculpture – often with political, or esoteric and ritual themes. The process is often layered and talismanic, considering the sacrality of objects. Sigilistic power centres. In 2023 he had two exhibitions in Tbilisi.
His Arts Council-supported public interventional sound art project Platform On The Ocean had the honour of being part of the first ever Trans Pride parade in the UK, in 2013 in Brighton. Likewise Nick composed a queered-up music box theme for the first Museum Of Transology exhibition at London College Of Fashion. In response to the BLM movement he collaborated with Maj Saleh to create a t-shirt emblazoned with the musical notes A-C-A-B with all profits going to US bail funds. He has received Arts Council funding for two other projects – Wishing Machine and Ganymede In A State Of War.
Mojo, The Quietus, Julian Cope, Billy Gould of Faith No More, These New Puritans, Xiu Xiu, Robert Wyatt, Robert Wilson, Terry Riley and Meredith Monk have all issued praise for his music. In 2018 his band The Academy Of Sun supported Mogwai, playing to 3000 people. He has also recorded session part and written arrangements for Archive and The Mission.
In 2015 he performed in New York at John Zorn’s venue The Stone, and in 2016 undertook a two month tour of Europe and the Middle East with NYC ensemble Kayo Dot. In 2017 he composed a graphic score for Danish soprano Ingrid Plum, which was premiered in 2018 with support from the Arts Council. In June 2018 he was invited to Seattle in June 2018 for a series of concerts and to record an album with composer Stuart Dahlquist (Sunn O))), Asva).
In September 2018 he composed a score for an unreleased super-8 film by revered British film director and activist, Derek Jarman, which was premiered at Cambridge Film Festival in October. In winter 2019 He was commissioned to compose a second Jarman score, this time to accompany the super-8 Garden Of Luxor, as part of an installation within a major Jarman retrospective at IMMA, Dublin. These were released on hyper-limited edition lathe-cut 8” vinyl in June 2023 and played on BBC Radio 3. In 2025 these films screened at the Pompidou Centre in Paris as part of huge Jarman retrospective.
Between 2012 and 2014 he was a contributing co-editor of One Plus One Filmmakers Journal. His short stories and poetry have been published in various international anthologies. His film work has been screened at Duke Of York's Brighton and Curzon, Soho. And he frequently directes his own videos.
In 2014 The British Library requested that he donate his recorded output to their sound archive for preservation in the interest of national posterity. They now catalogue all of his works.
In May 2019 he gave a piano recital in the northernmost art gallery in the world – in the Svalbard archipelago in the high Arctic. That same year his band performed with Shara Nelson from Massive Attack at Brighton Dome.
In October 2020 he completed his first novel – Inheritance.
In 2020 the video he co-created with Adrian Goycoolea for his song The Ballad Of K69996 Roma – about the car that killed Pasolini – was requested by the Pasolini archive in Bologna.
In 2024 he released Kanda Teenage Honey, solo record, a song cycle about the preservation of innocence in the face of politically corrosive institutions - mixed by Toby Driver of Kayo Dot and featuring contributions from Alfie Benge (Robert Wyatt), Stuart Dahlquist (Sunn O))), Asva), Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai). He then released the “queer ACAB harpsichord” record On The Eve Of Hope in 2025, laden with field recordings he made during the Georgian protests. He undertook two European tours in support of this record in 2025.
He also collaborates extensively with British-born artist and agitator Gary Mallard in performance collective Alumna Infractible which has seen him naked and buried alive onstage at a show in Tbilisi.
In spring 2026 he spent two weeks in Sicily working on a theatre play script about his experiences in Georgia, and will release a new solo album – Trees Reign Down, Fire On in the autumn.
