Mister Kyat - a humble musician who's known for his experimental music and rhythms / Riddim!
Mister Kyat, born Jerome Matthew on June 25, 1986, on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba, is a multifaceted artist, producer, and recording engineer whose musical journey has been shaped by a lifetime of passion, resilience, and innovation. Raised between Saba and St. Maarten, Jerome grew up surrounded by creativity and Caribbean musical culture, eventually establishing himself as a respected force in regional music production.
From a young age, Jerome gravitated toward music. On Saba, he spent countless hours teaching himself piano on a small Casio keyboard of his sister, and repairing a water-damaged Boss DR-550 drum machine that would become one of his first tools for beatmaking. His early fascination with sound, combined with the influence of his father (Roelof Matthew "Basses") a well-known figure in St. Maarten’s music scene—fueled his determination to grow as a musician.
In the late 90s, he began performing and experimenting with friends , forming his first band "Destruction Band" , and later forming "Verdict Crew" alongside his sister. This group became a key creative outlet, blending genres and pushing boundaries. In 2000, Verdict Crew won 1st place at the local Road March competition with their carnival hit “Rhythm Galore,” solidifying Jerome’s confidence as a young producer and performer.
Between 2001 and 2002, Jerome spent significant time in St. Maarten working at his father’s studio as an assistant producer and recording engineer. There, he collaborated with school choirs, rap artists, calypsonians, and various emerging talents—experience that strengthened his technical and artistic foundation.
After graduating high school in 2003, Jerome committed fully to his music career. With a growing catalog of original songs, he recorded his first studio album, “Bust Dem,” a nine-track project produced at his father’s studio and well received by the public. That same year, he helped form Entyce Band, merging members of Destruction Band with musicians from another local group. Entyce Band, co-named and co-led by Jerome, continues to perform and thrive to this day.
Throughout the 2000s, Jerome expanded his production style, forming Triple Threat in and exploring rap, hip-hop, R&B & Afro-influenced sounds.
He went on to produce, arrange, and record for numerous bands and artists across the Caribbean, including No Limit Band (SXM), Impakt Band (SXM), Impak Band (Aruba), Daddy Slim (Saba), and many others.
Facing Challenges he nearly abandoned music altogether, Jerome was uplifted by fellow musicians who reminded him of his purpose. These challenges ultimately led to a creative rebirth. Determined to create music on his own terms, he launched Mister Kyat Productions, a personal outlet where he could develop his sound freely, producing remixes (Riddims) and original songs at his own pace.
In 2021, Kyat featured on a St. Kitts & Nevis Producer "Daddy2Sec" Project: “TanTan Riddim” releasing his single “Long Time.
In 2023, the Government of Saba honored him with an award recognizing his long-standing contributions to the island’s music, arts, and culture. Though humbled, Jerome has remained outspoken about the challenges local artists face in securing resources and support, continuing to advocate for the creative community.
Recently, he has released a variety of original works and remixes, including Christmas productions such as “Christmas Issa Vibe” (featuring three Saba artists) and “Santa Claus What You Bringing This Morning?”
Today, Mister Kyat is focused on distributing his original music to all major streaming platforms, proudly representing Saba’s talent to the world. With decades of experience, a catalog rooted in Caribbean sound, and an unwavering commitment to creativity, he continues to evolve as one of the island’s most dedicated musical voices.
