atish - Peculiar Colors EP [MAMA005] by Manjumasi Music

The fifth EP from Manjumasi marks a creative milestone for label co-founder atish, his debut solo EP. Over the past year, atish has been making time away from the decks to get in the studio, drawing on his experience playing for dancefloors around the globe to craft sounds of his own. The result is the Peculiar Colors EP.

The two originals on the package very much reflect atish's signature style: deep and melodic. Twiddles is a textural and hypnotic number, with delicate and spacey melodies floating over a bed of modulated synth pads. Peculiar Colors is built around an upfront hook, melding an orchestral palette of mallet percussion with a solid bass-driven groove.

Berlin-based Lee Jones delivers the first remix, emphasizing the colors. Following in the style of his outstanding recent EP on Bar25 Music, Lee has turned in an interpretation that is richly emotive, gently but insistently pushing melodies forward. The results are both beautiful and contemplative, with a sturdy kick that keeps the dancefloor energy firmly in place.

Meanwhile, LA-based production duo Dance Spirit have committed themselves to a proper exploration of the peculiar, delivering a remix that takes things in an otherworldy direction. Their remix is a sonic dissection, melodies stretched and recombined into an extremely trippy affair, percussive riffs echoing through hyperspace. This is one for the late-night dancefloors or the early morning hours, solidly rounding out the package and putting a fine point of punctuation on atish's arrival as a producer.
