The Giving Tree by jess best published on 2017-01-01T23:56:00Z I'm still in mourning over my beautiful friend/collaborator/bandmate/alien Claire Randall passing this December. The day she passed away Connor and I randomly decided to do a songwriting exercise where we would write an album about the book The Giving Tree. We even passed by Barnes and Nobles and bought a beautiful hardcover copy just for our keepsake. Just as we sat down to begin writing, we heard news about Claire. The past few weeks have left us in silence, but we felt compelled to spend our holidays writing and producing The Giving Tree album. We started on December 26. In Claire's spirit and her love of the spontaneous, weird, and unfiltered we promised ourselves to release whatever comes out. I see her everywhere, hear her voice in my head, but most of all she rocks me so deeply when any music is in the room. I've never felt so physically reactive to music, so much so that when I first tried to sing my body would only shake. When I sing I feel closest to her and I am not going to run away from that feeling even though it hurts in every way. Here marks the beginning of that process of sitting in a room and working through this.
