I interview Vica Bayley, Director of the Tasmania division of the Wilderness Society. Vica gives us an overview of the situation in Tasmania with the old-growth forests, unique temperate zone rain-forests who are also Gondwanaland remnants, jewels of Mother Earth. These forests have been under attack for decades. Last year a large area of forest was added to the World Heritage domain, and an equitable agreement was signed between government, forestry and environmental protection organizations. Now, under new administrations in Australia at the national level, and in Tasmania at the state level, this agreement is being shredded in the interest of renewed ecocidal logging and deforestation. A new level of activism on the part of the people of Tasmania and the people of the world is required to save and protect this unique and majestic forest heritage.
