The Rest of the World (Out of Africa Vol 5) by Ivodne Galatea published on 2016-01-20T09:18:33Z Another album of situated music: Volume 5 of the Out of Africa Series visits the mbira ancestry of the Hohner Pianet Model T, and is the second half of the extended Pianet rendition of the Great Mbira Cycle. This featuring Mahororo, Nyamamusanga, Taireva and the grandfather fo them all, Nyamaropa. Again, it's an arrangement of mbira classics for two Pianets: one playing the role of kushaura and the other the role of kitsinhira. It involves extended performances of the music in the manner of classic mbira performances. It is an approximation of performances I make with a Strymon El Capistan single-shot looper at home. Additional modulation and saturation using a Strymon Deco tape emulator. The music investigates the upward cycle of mbira songs through diatonic transposition: I, II, III, IV, and so on returning to the octave. This is the second half , with V (Mahoro), VI (Nyamamusango) and VI (Taireva) with a reprise of the tonic VIII (Nyamaropa) to round it out. Pieces for I-IV were in a previous album. Nyamaropa is the great piece of the Mbira cycle: some say the original piece of cycle. From it many of the other pieces were derived, so it explores a lot of the ramifications of the piece melodically in the various interpretations by the grand players of mbira. Additionally this means that not only is the rendition the longest in this series of recordings (nearly half an hour continuous playing) it also features hints of other pieces incluing Nhemamusasa and Chipembere. The piece has a setting inspired by the overll slightly melancholy nature of the second half of the mbira cycle - I have put it in a dusk setting at at the same time (inspired by a childhood country experience of a total eclipse) I have an emergent dawn chorus at the same time as a dusk chorus throughout. The acknowledgements of the Freesound contributors are listed fully in the tracks, but thank to these kind people. It also means that a planned final volume 6 won't happen unless I can bear to go through the entire arranging and recording process again.
