The Tipping Point: Women and the SWINTER Aircrew Trial

Have you ever heard of the SWINTER Aircrew Trial?

The SWINTER (Servicewomen in Non-Traditional Environments and Roles) Aircrew Trial was one of four Canadian military trials, held between 1979 and 1985, that tested women in roles previously restricted to men. It was the first time in Canadian history that women were allowed to train and serve as pilots, air navigators, and flight engineers in the Royal Canadian Air Force. However, their employment was temporary and the results of the Aircrew Trial were used to determine whether or not women had a future in non-traditional air force roles.

In five episodes, The Tipping Point tells the story of this forgotten moment in Canadian history. Using archival research and oral histories, The Tipping Point puts women’s voices at the centre of the story, exploring the impact of the Aircrew Trial on the women who participated and its significance over forty years later.

Avez-vous déjà entendu parler de l’essai SWINTER?

L’essai SWINTER (Service Women in Non-traditional Environments and Roles) a été un des quatre essais militaires réalisés de 1979 à 1985 pour tester l’emploi de femmes dans des rôles auparavant réservés aux hommes. C’était la première fois dans l’histoire du Canada que les femmes étaient autorisées à être formées et à servir en tant que pilotes, navigatrices aériennes et mécaniciennes de bord dans cinq escadrons opérationnels de l’Aviation royale canadienne. Toutefois, ces emplois étaient temporaires – l’essai avait pour but de déterminer si les femmes avaient un avenir dans ces rôles non traditionnels de l’armée de l’air.

Le point de bascule raconte en cinq épisodes ce moment oublié de l’histoire canadienne. En s’appuyant sur des archives et des récits oraux, Le point de bascule place la voix des femmes au centre de l’histoire pour explorer l’impact de l’essai SWINTER sur les femmes qui y ont participé et sa signification plus de 40 ans plus tard.
