In Episode 5, we spoke to Dr Rosa Balfour, Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund in Brussels about the challenges facing European democracies and the rise of populism.

Dr Balfour explained why she believes Europe is currently facing a ‘democratic recession’ as a result of globalisation, widening economic inequalities, loss of cultural identities and discontent with traditional national parties that are no longer seen as representative of society. We also discussed possible causes for the resurgence in nationalism and the rise of populism.
