Often the simplest ideas spark the inspiration for a poem. Walking into York in November, along the pavements wet from drizzling rain, I notice a steady procession of the elderly, retired folk taking their leisure and heading towards the walled city, all eager, no doubt, for their hit of caffeine. But at what cost, and to whom?

For those who don't know, the triple lock is a mechanism whereby pension rise, usually at a greater rate than the wages of those currently paying into the welfare system.
