Dedicated to all the scientists, health professionals and researchers who have been ignored, maligned and outright cancelled during the last year. Science is not a set of incontrovertible facts be be followed blindly, it is a process of enquiry and the suppression of that process is a tactic of religions, cults and ideologues, not science.

Credit goes to Susana's uncle Sid who, at the age of 84 and with a strong science and technology background, provided the line, "it's the outward sign of their inner grace".

A special thank you to C.J. Hopkins for his insightful satire which has helped me keep the last year in perspective. OK, he's not a scientist but his book 'Zone 23' penned in 2015 eerily parallels much of the authoritarianism that is escalating in the world at the moment. It was in his early 2020 essays that I first encountered the term 'New Normals' to define those who are willingly embracing these political incursions.
