Exclusive New Melbourne-Only Single ‘I’m In Love’
Launching @ Workers Club Friday 19 April
~
From forthcoming second album
Penned with buddy Nick Finch[Graveyard Train] under several influences, and recorded in a similar state, the Melbourne-only preview release ‘I’m In Love’ has Savage’s sublime vocals transcending banjo, gentle strings, mournful brass and the backing of a 15-strong choir in what the artist calls the nicest song she’s ever written. Reaching joyous crescendos, the music takes previous labels attributed to Cash – “psychedelic country”, for example – and deserts them at sea.
Since the delivery of debut album Wolf (2011), Cash Savage and her band The Last Drinks have covered a lot of ground – personally, metaphorically and geographically. This time around, they entered the studio with their pick of Melbourne engineers, Japanese-born Nao Anzai, and Nick Finch on board as producer, and commenced recording with none of the preconceptions that framed Wolf.
Having spent the gulf between albums on the road – taking in country theatres, time-honoured urban venues, as well as the Famous Speigeltent, Meredith Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the willow-shrouded Riverboats Music Festival alongside Pete Murray, Clare Bowditch, Archie Roach and James Reyne — the once fluid Last Drinks line up has successfully solidified.
Backed by a solid and well-oiled band, Cash shared the reins for album number two. She handed songs to her trusty troupe and the album took shape collaboratively. The result is the sum of drunken kinship polished with hard yards, while retaining the soul for which Cash is renowned.
The anticipated record will prove an incredible suite of stories: a family forced to give up a farm they love, but can’t keep; loveless marriages, messy breakups and the hypnotic pull of unexpected attraction; the death of a beloved companion; and the dangerous meeting of an unsuspecting Samaritan and a hitchhiking arsonist.
But the true Cash Savage experience takes place on the stage, where the singer thrives on her audience, affecting crowds from country and city alike with a tonic of honesty, sincerity and raw emotion. It’ll be there that the full majesty of ‘I’m In Love’ is realized in its first official outing, when the band’s beloved Melbourne get the inside leg on what will be a remarkable album.
“There are very few voices in this town that rival Cash Savage. Big, bold, honest and full of the kind of heartbreak and vitriol that makes grown men weep, hers is a voice that cannot be described,
only experienced.”
Tristen Harris – RRR 102.7
“It’s almost like watching Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Burning with a violent passion one minute, then self-effacing the next…And it’s somewhat fascinating to watch. It’s like she’s possessed…This band is an institution.”
The AU Review
“Cash Savage And The Last Drinks are one of the few bands to ooze a very unique type of raw, deep-seated emotion through every song, a timeless quality which will no doubt mean longevity in the Australian country and blues scene.”
Madeleine O’Gorman - Unpaved
“The psychedelic country tunes are by turns breezy and hard, evoking a feeling akin to swinging on an old Hills Hoist clothesline in fresh country air.”
