October 2024 - Civitas Annual Conference: Since 2014 the Office of the National Coordinator has been measuring engagement of data exchange in four domains, send, receive, find, and integrate. In a recent ONC Data brief, they reported that 70% of non-federal acute care hospitals engaged in all domains of interoperable exchange routinely or sometimes in 2023. Lower-resourced hospitals engaged less frequently in interoperable exchange when compared to their higher-resourced counterparts. 71% of hospitals reported routine access to necessary clinical information from outside providers, but only 42% indicated that clinicians routinely use it when treating patients. Engagement has been increasing but the numbers do not reflect a true interoperable data exchange system that is needed to ensure clinicians have access to the most timely and relevant patient health information when making healthcare decisions.

October 2023 - AHIMA National Conference: Healthcare data is “a strategic asset that has to be managed” according to AHIMA’s practice brief on Data Governance. And there’s power in the completeness of our healthcare data. According to the National Library of Medicine, data must be clean and free of errors to extract reliable information from large data stores and make better clinical decisions. But this isn’t always the case.

September 2023 - 23rd Population Health Colloquium: Health inequity doesn’t just mean unfair and unequal health outcomes, it also carries a significant cost – $450B according to the National Institutes of Health. New innovations in pop health technology, are addressing the problem of health inequality, while steadily moving our industry towards value based care.

June 2023 - HFMA Annual Conference: Kaufman Hall's May National Hospital Flash report noted that hospitals just barely broke even, with zero percent operating margins. And bad debt and charity care might rise due to Medicaid disenrollment. Kaufman Hall’s recommendation for CFOs was to build a “strategic path forward to ensure financial sustainability”.

April 2023 - HIMSS23: The American Hospital Association has released a series of reports that showed hospitals and health systems will continue to face pressure on staff and resources while also dealing with rising expenses across the board in 2023. Deloitte's health system financial forecast is "exceptionally turbulent."
