Musicians are arrested and put in prison on a regular basis. State censorship has an effect on all parts of daily life. Other than traditional Iranian music, hardly any music can be heard in the internet or on radio. In Iran 70% of the population is under 30 years old. Illegal music data and banned CDs are usually smuggled in from abroad and then distributed. Sohrab’s music also can’t be played in Iran. His first album came out on the English label “Touch”, and his first public appearance took place in the Berlin club Berghain. Sohrab did not return to Iran, he lives and works in Berlin. At WAU, alongside music banned in Iran in the ‘60s and ‘70s, he will also play current Iranian productions.
