I'm paul.meme. I do music as Grievous Angel. I make garage in all its forms - 2step, dubstep and UK funky. I'm using Soundcloud to put some mixes out there. There are loads more at blog.grievousangel.net/mixes. My first release was a double album of dubstep, ragga techno and dancehall called Belief is the Enemy on a Japanese label called Electrik Dragon. That did alright. Then I did a single on my own label, Devotional Dubz, a refix of D'Angelo's Lady, which had one side of floaty 808-driven vocal bliss and a side of high-stepping 2step. A lot of people liked it. I did a load of tunes people played out on plate. Then I started making UK funky seriously. I put out a refix of :ady Saw and Cecille's Loser backed with a funky refix of Move Down Low off the first album.My biggest single was a 2step version of Irish jungle producer Naphta's Soundclash1, on Martin Clark's brilliant Keysound label. Then I did a funky remix of Atki2 and Dub Boy's TigerFlower on Idle Hands. I spent a lot of time last year remixing the entirety of Blackdown and Dusk's first album, Margins Music. It's now out as Margins Music Redux. It's a big CD - had good reviews from the Word, iDJ, the Wire, places you wouldn't necessarily expect. There's a few more singles coming, most importantly the VIP of Move Down Low on the mighty Soul Jazz records. I’m from the Essex / East End borders, but I live in Sheffield now, have done for a few years. I think it’s the most beautiful and weirdest city in Britain. I used to be into industrial stuff. I liked the way reggae end of that scene – Tackhead / ON-U etc – drifted into acid house and ardkore. To me, the sonics (and the transcendence) of industrial are all over dubstep. I still love house music and I think most dubstep heads will get into Theo Parrish eventually. I don’t think King Tubby is over-rated, but I do love a bit of Jammy$. I love the dubstep scene – I think it’s up there with the best scenes to have come out of dance music. It’s got real love vibes. DMZ is the best club in the world right now. But reggae is my first love. I think Jah Shaka at his peak is the best DJ in the world bar none. Seeing the Abyssinians was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’m involved with Dust Science. It’s a techno and electronica label. We’ve got some really good, well known artists – the Black Dog, Dan Curtin, Derailleur, Anthony “Shake” Shakir, people like that. A lot of Detroit gear. I helped put together Woofah magazine with John Eden – we’re DJ partners and all-round collaborators - and Irish dancehall don Droid. It's the first serious British reggae fanzine for about ten years. It also covers grime and a bit of dubstep. It’s paper only – not a throwaway webpage. We just put out issue 4 - it's been going since 2007. I’m the dubstep editor as well as helping get things done. It’s edited by Droid now.
