Nairobi-based electronic artist Goddess works across DJing and music production, treating the dancefloor and the studio as two parts of the same creative practice. Behind the decks, the dancefloor comes first; in the studio, sound takes centre stage.Releasing music under the alias ЯU, she uses production to explore ideas freely. Their latest release Black Butterfly is inspired by the experimental spirit of the Gqom records that have shaped their DJ sets over the years. It explores rhythm as the main element in the composition, uses experimental sound design, chopped up vocal samples, African drums and composite percussion, to create a bass-heavy club record. The track draws listeners and DJs exploring Gqom, contemporary African electronic music, and experimental electronic music.
