"Knock On That Door" by The Memories by Free Weed published on 2013-11-20T20:06:44Z From the upcoming "Ripple" by The Memories (11/26/13) on Gnar Tapes & Shit (Portland, OR) The Memories could be called silly, goofy, or even straight up dumb, but anyone who cares will tell you that underneath all that stupid sugar-coated frosting there is a real vein of love and affection streaking through their songs. So far these songs have only given hints at real heartbreak (because who wants all that soppy sad stuff?) and kept a generally playful distance away from getting too sentimental. Maybe that's why this new tape is called RIPPLE. It's a small drop in the pond in the much larger lake of The Memories steadily growing catalog (this is the 8th cassette)of their very own brand of sometimes soft, sometimes silly stoner pop romance. RIPPLE takes on a much more breezy, folk-inflected tone with acoustic guitars, Traveling Wilburys inspired rhythms, and a genuinely homespun feel. The lyrics showcase a more serious reflective side of The Memories. The tape opens and closes with the image of a broken heart as a doorway; do you step outside to see the world so new, yet so familiar? Or do you ignore the knocks of love from inside your closed-off heart-house? These are songs of heartbreak but also of healing, and ultimately choice. Would you knock on that door?
