京都府立福知山高等学校吹奏楽部と、奈良県立情報商業高等学校吹奏楽部の協同委嘱により作曲した作品から、調性を4度下げ、編成を絞った改訂版です。曲の構成は原典版と同じです。

お話を元にその内容を音楽で表現するという依頼で、当初、話を選ぶのにいろいろな方向で探してみましたが、イメージが膨らまず苦労していた時に、ふと見た演劇のチラシに西遊記の文字を見つけ、西遊記の文字を目にした途端に、イメージが広がっていきました。

発想記号のところに話の内容を記してありますので、演奏する皆さまが自由にイメージを膨らませていただけると良いと思います。

お話は三蔵法師一行が天竺に着いて終わりになりますが、この曲は妖怪に勝った後、再び旅を続けるところで終わります。

私の仕事もそうですが、音楽は終わりのない旅だと思います。気持ちを遠くまで飛ばすように、終わりに向かって落ち着くのではなく、また、新たな旅立ちに向かって曲の終わりを表現していただければと思います。(福島弘和)

The original piece was jointly commissioned by Fukuchiyama High School and Nara Prefectural Nara Informational and Commercial High School. In this revised version, the key was lowered by 4 degrees and the composition was narrowed down. The composition is the same as the original version.

I initially attempted to search in various directions for a story that would fulfill the commissioners’ requirement that the piece should express the narrative of a story through music. When I was struggling with the lack of ideas, I unexpectedly came across the words “Saiyuki” on a theater flyer which gave me fresh inspiration on how to approach the piece.

As the story’s narrative is annotated along with the musical directions, I hope that everyone who plays this piece will be able to freely expand on their own ideas. While the story ends when Sanzo Hoshi and his team reach Tenjiku, this piece ends as they embark on a new journey after defeating the demons.

Like my job, I believe that music is a journey that never ends. Instead of bringing the piece to a subdued close, I hope you can end the piece in a flourish that symbolizes the start of yet another new journey as you cast your feelings far and wide.
